Dr. Mias Pretorius, MBChB, MSCI, is an academic cardiac anesthesiologist and Professor of Anesthesiology and Clinical Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) in Nashville, Tennessee. With over two decades of clinical and research experience, he currently serves as the Anesthesiology Director of Structural Heart Disease and the VAPIR Associate Director for Quality Improvement and Safety.
Dr. Pretorius earned his medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Pretoria in South Africa in 1993. He relocated to Nashville, completing his residency and a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia at VUMC in 2000. He joined the VUMC faculty in 2001 and went on to earn a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) from Vanderbilt in 2002.
He previously served as the Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology (2016–2023) and Medical Director of the Cardiac Surgery Operating Rooms. Beyond VUMC, he actively contributes to the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA) and serves on the National Board of Echocardiography (NBE) Examination Committee.
